Among the more unusual places you will find a regional dining delicacy is New Haven’s Wooster Street. Just two blocks long, it is filled with Italian restaurants, some of whom specialize in what the natives call “apizz." Pepe’s is the most famous of the pizzerias on the block, and they have been stretching out bundles of dough into pies since 1925. Always popular with locals, and especially Yale students on a budget, Pepe’s became a nationwide foodie destination when Calvin Trillin and Jane and Michael Stern, waxed poetic about Pepe’s white clam pizza in the 1970’s. The place is hugely popular, which means the waiting time can be horrendous. In fact, we once drove there from New York City just to have dinner only to find a two-hour wait, after which they had run out of fresh clams so we had to switch our topping to sausage.

Although known for its clam pizza, the red sauce regular pie or with veggies is purely terrific.
People love to debate between Modern, Sally's and Pepe's. To me they're all great..and worth a visit..get a regular and a clam/garlic.

Pepe's makes a good pie, but not one worthy of the hype. It's a little heavy, the pie lacks the requisite char, and the cheese isn't of a particularly high quality. I like it fine, but it doesn't stack up to the NYC heavyweights
Once was as good as Sally's, but their expansion has hurt qualty. Still excellent. They also have a branch outside Hartford.
Great pizza. But i found the famous clam pizza too salty.
The pizzas are as good as can be found, especially the white clam pie. That may be my favorite pizza anywhere.

BAR NONE, the best white clam pizza on the planet. I will even eat it if someone brings it from NH to ME, a day later!
