Opened as a cheese shop during the Bay Area food revolution of the mid-70s, the Collective expanded into "pizza for Tuesday lunch" in 1985. The then-novel artisanal pizza caused a sensation, and the Collective (based on the principles of an Israeli kibbutz) opened a full-time restaurant.
